The Next New Thing

How many times you need to hide at work or in class to text somebody? I believe that a new thing that should come out is new way of texting in which people don’t have to type a text message. A new way of texting will be that we just have to tell verbally the phone what to write for us. It will be a pretty good idea and would bring a good contribution to new media because people use texting as a way to communicate with others every day. But if we would have this application in our phone, it should help us to communicate faster. We also will not have to hide at work or in class to text somebody because we will only press a button and say something fast to our phone.

Our Class Wiki- So Far

Wiki so far is pretty good because I had the task to contribute to the wiki page Education. I decided to contribute to this page because I think is a very interesting topic in which everybody needs to know more about it. Also, I choose it because education practically is part of my life and I been going through all the stage of education. So far in the Education Page I downloaded the pictures that first appear when you open or click in the page. I designed the contents of the page and I structured it too. I feel very happy about the contribution that I did to this page because start in March and then I recently saw that thanks to structure that I designed my classmates could make their contribution to this page. Lastly, now I am research in the future of education and how it is important is the primary education for the children.

About my Term Research Paper

My research paper was very challenge for me because I was not that aware about social networking’s issues. I have to do a lot of research about it in Google and in the school’s library. I found a lot interesting article about the advantages and disadvantages of social networks sites in which help me to put my ideas together. I also tried to find books about the dark sides of social network but it was impossible to find one that touches deeply this point.

At first I focused to talk about the advantages of having social network sites. Also what are the contributions that social networking sites have make to new media and society. I described and what the most popular social network sites does. I tried to compare the different social network sites. Then I focused on the bad sides of social network. I tough my future readers why might was a mistakes to sign up for a social network.

I choose this topic because since last year I wanted to know the dark sides of social network sites. Last semester I took a CIS class and I heard a negative comment about social network sites and that maybe it was a mistake for everybody to sign up for a social network. Since that the day I have the curiosity of the dark sides of social network sides or why my classmates were talking bad about it because for me social network sites were the most wonderful things that was in the internet.

Thank you to the research my paper I learned that social network sites are not what I thought and it changes my whole perceptions about it. After I wrote this paper, I feel remorseful of signed up for a social network. But my research really taught me that I need to be careful with what I posted in those sites.

Privacy & Confidentiality

I believe that people who use any type of new media don’t have that much privacy. Everything that anyone sign up for a social network, or a new email, and posted something online can easily and “unintentionally” lose some amounts of privacy. One of the reasons is that when we sign up for anything online we are required to put some of our own personal information. Now we have powerful search engines, such as Google, that can find anything in the website even the personal information that putted it when you sign up for a social network. For example, an email address of the senders could be retrieved by anybody using the direct quote as a query.

Also, when it comes to privacy depends on the users of new media because most of the people that now have social networks like Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter been posted too much information on it. When I go in to Facebook I see people write in their wall where they eat or where they are going to hang out in the weekend. I believe when it come to sign up for anything online people need to be careful because now anyone can search for any information about yourself. For example, there are websites like intelius.com and searchpeople.com that help people to find anyone just by typing their names.

Advice to Baruch College

A way to improve new media at school is by develop an exclusive social network for Baruch students only. It would be very beneficial to the school because the student would be able to know more about their classmate and the people that they see in the hallway. As we might know most of the students in Baruch are hard for them to make friends at school or they just talk with their classmate only about their assignments. I believe this idea would improve new media at school and social life because student would be more interesting to get to know more about their classmate and faculties. It could also motivate students more to participant of school activates and clubs. Also, everybody can be more informed about what is going on at school.

Virtual World

Virtual life is like a second life that we imagined and created virtually. Now day people, especially boys, use the virtual world to play games. It could drive them to a real war where they could imagine that they are soldiers. The virtual world can be used to shows others a new project and how it will be, such as a new buildings, or urbanizations. Virtual world basically shows the others a new world, it drive anyone to a future.

The article “Social Influence and the Diffusion of User-Created Content” by Bakshy, Karrer, and Adamic states that “ In Second Life, you can search for interesting places to visit on your own, or a friend or business can give you a landmark – a bookmark that allows you to teleport directly to a location. If upon arriving, you would like your avatar to dance, wave, or make a certain sound, you need to retrieve that gesture from your inventory of assets.” The virtual world is like a second life where you can do whatever you want and imagine that you are living it. Also, you can see different places that maybe in real life we don’t have it. Anyone can construct your own land or construct your perfect life.

In the future everyone would be part of a virtual life. It also would be use for many corporations to show they new project to clients or the public, such as a new construction of buildings, malls or urbanizations. The second life would be use with frequently.

Twitter Discussion

Having a discussion in twitter is like send text message. There is a limited of 140 word maximum which it does not allow you to express whatever you want to say. But it is a good experiences and it made me feel like I was texting a friend through my computer.

Unlike Blackboard or class discussion, twitter is a public site that anyone can see your posts. In blackboard we have more privacy because you can share your opinion or posts with your classmates and teachers only. Of course in blackboard you have more space to express yourself in word.
In Twitter anyone can make a discussion or a doubt about anything but it will be in short word or like you are texting somebody. While a blackboard you can a discussion with more space to write and with more privacy.
