The Next New Thing

How many times you need to hide at work or in class to text somebody? I believe that a new thing that should come out is new way of texting in which people don’t have to type a text message. A new way of texting will be that we just have to tell verbally the phone what to write for us. It will be a pretty good idea and would bring a good contribution to new media because people use texting as a way to communicate with others every day. But if we would have this application in our phone, it should help us to communicate faster. We also will not have to hide at work or in class to text somebody because we will only press a button and say something fast to our phone.

Our Class Wiki- So Far

Wiki so far is pretty good because I had the task to contribute to the wiki page Education. I decided to contribute to this page because I think is a very interesting topic in which everybody needs to know more about it. Also, I choose it because education practically is part of my life and I been going through all the stage of education. So far in the Education Page I downloaded the pictures that first appear when you open or click in the page. I designed the contents of the page and I structured it too. I feel very happy about the contribution that I did to this page because start in March and then I recently saw that thanks to structure that I designed my classmates could make their contribution to this page. Lastly, now I am research in the future of education and how it is important is the primary education for the children.

About my Term Research Paper

My research paper was very challenge for me because I was not that aware about social networking’s issues. I have to do a lot of research about it in Google and in the school’s library. I found a lot interesting article about the advantages and disadvantages of social networks sites in which help me to put my ideas together. I also tried to find books about the dark sides of social network but it was impossible to find one that touches deeply this point.

At first I focused to talk about the advantages of having social network sites. Also what are the contributions that social networking sites have make to new media and society. I described and what the most popular social network sites does. I tried to compare the different social network sites. Then I focused on the bad sides of social network. I tough my future readers why might was a mistakes to sign up for a social network.

I choose this topic because since last year I wanted to know the dark sides of social network sites. Last semester I took a CIS class and I heard a negative comment about social network sites and that maybe it was a mistake for everybody to sign up for a social network. Since that the day I have the curiosity of the dark sides of social network sides or why my classmates were talking bad about it because for me social network sites were the most wonderful things that was in the internet.

Thank you to the research my paper I learned that social network sites are not what I thought and it changes my whole perceptions about it. After I wrote this paper, I feel remorseful of signed up for a social network. But my research really taught me that I need to be careful with what I posted in those sites.

Privacy & Confidentiality

I believe that people who use any type of new media don’t have that much privacy. Everything that anyone sign up for a social network, or a new email, and posted something online can easily and “unintentionally” lose some amounts of privacy. One of the reasons is that when we sign up for anything online we are required to put some of our own personal information. Now we have powerful search engines, such as Google, that can find anything in the website even the personal information that putted it when you sign up for a social network. For example, an email address of the senders could be retrieved by anybody using the direct quote as a query.

Also, when it comes to privacy depends on the users of new media because most of the people that now have social networks like Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter been posted too much information on it. When I go in to Facebook I see people write in their wall where they eat or where they are going to hang out in the weekend. I believe when it come to sign up for anything online people need to be careful because now anyone can search for any information about yourself. For example, there are websites like intelius.com and searchpeople.com that help people to find anyone just by typing their names.

Advice to Baruch College

A way to improve new media at school is by develop an exclusive social network for Baruch students only. It would be very beneficial to the school because the student would be able to know more about their classmate and the people that they see in the hallway. As we might know most of the students in Baruch are hard for them to make friends at school or they just talk with their classmate only about their assignments. I believe this idea would improve new media at school and social life because student would be more interesting to get to know more about their classmate and faculties. It could also motivate students more to participant of school activates and clubs. Also, everybody can be more informed about what is going on at school.

Virtual World

Virtual life is like a second life that we imagined and created virtually. Now day people, especially boys, use the virtual world to play games. It could drive them to a real war where they could imagine that they are soldiers. The virtual world can be used to shows others a new project and how it will be, such as a new buildings, or urbanizations. Virtual world basically shows the others a new world, it drive anyone to a future.

The article “Social Influence and the Diffusion of User-Created Content” by Bakshy, Karrer, and Adamic states that “ In Second Life, you can search for interesting places to visit on your own, or a friend or business can give you a landmark – a bookmark that allows you to teleport directly to a location. If upon arriving, you would like your avatar to dance, wave, or make a certain sound, you need to retrieve that gesture from your inventory of assets.” The virtual world is like a second life where you can do whatever you want and imagine that you are living it. Also, you can see different places that maybe in real life we don’t have it. Anyone can construct your own land or construct your perfect life.

In the future everyone would be part of a virtual life. It also would be use for many corporations to show they new project to clients or the public, such as a new construction of buildings, malls or urbanizations. The second life would be use with frequently.

Twitter Discussion

Having a discussion in twitter is like send text message. There is a limited of 140 word maximum which it does not allow you to express whatever you want to say. But it is a good experiences and it made me feel like I was texting a friend through my computer.

Unlike Blackboard or class discussion, twitter is a public site that anyone can see your posts. In blackboard we have more privacy because you can share your opinion or posts with your classmates and teachers only. Of course in blackboard you have more space to express yourself in word.
In Twitter anyone can make a discussion or a doubt about anything but it will be in short word or like you are texting somebody. While a blackboard you can a discussion with more space to write and with more privacy.

Social Networking

Social networking is a virtual community that with time has grown a tremendously popularity and impact worldwide. As it is describes in the YouTube video “Social Media in Plain English”, a social networking is like a little community where everybody share their personal information, pictures and comments in which friends post comment about it and rates it. Social networking sites are one of the most incredible things that is in the cyber world because thanks to its people can find old friends and families and still in touch with them. Also it bought the opportunity to many users to find their love of their life.

According to the article “Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship” by Danah Boyd and Nicole Ellison, that “Sites also vary in the extent to which they incorporate new information and communication tools, such as mobile connectivity, blogging, and photo/video sharing”. Definitely social network sites brought the world new technology or new ways to communicate, such as now people can be update their social network profile anytime through their own phone. Also, people from anywhere of the world can share photos and videos as well as their own interests.

Social networking is a good thing in a way because it brought us new things and the power to be update with our friends and families. But the bad things about social network sites are that you might would not have a privacy life anyone could be able to find your personal information. As I saw in the YouTube video “Facebook in the real world” in which states that the dark side of the social networking sites are that maybe with the time user could not have privacy life because friends and members access to personal information and pictures.

All social networking sites have the same object in which is to meet and get to know new people. In my opinion all social networking are the same because they have the same goals or objective but the only thing is that they have different concepts and structures. I have accounts in MySpace, Hi5, Facebook, Blog and Twitter.

My space is social network site that at the beginning was kind of fun for its users because everybody was uploading new pictures, funny videos and all types of layout. But then with the time it only became use for publicity for parties and club. Facebook is a social network is used mostly for college student. I think this site is a nice social network to go to because you can post your thoughts or whatever you one and comment your friends update. Hi5 is a sites in which is popular in the Caribbean and Latin American. I personally don’t like too much this website but I used it to keep in contact with my friends and families that are in my country.

Blog is like a journal website because you can write whatever you one from a poem to a simple article. Blog is mostly used by journalist because they can write in freestyle and see the comment of what they friends think about it. If you like to write and read new things, and meet new people with the same interesting definitely Blog is your website.

Blog vs Wiki

Wiki is a collaborative website which can be edited to anyone who has access to it. Wiki is a website that allows users to edit and posted online document that with the time they have to keep update it. It provides information to the public and at the same time educated the people. In the article “More on How to Build Your Own Wikipedia” by Margaret Locher states that “diverse organization, including businesses, schools and government agencies, are waking up to the benefits of wikis”. In wiki we find any information about thousands of subject. Wiki is mostly use for the public to get information about a subject and it benefits them in different ways, such as, student use it as a preference for their assignment.

In the other hand Blog is a more a journal website. For me Blog is like a social network because you have access to the user information and pictures. It also maintained the user comments in a chronological order. Blog is useful for the public because it allows the users to write whatever they feel. But it does not educate the public how Wiki does.

Wiki and Blog improve communication online in different ways, such as, both spread information around the world. They also can be used for collaboration because they allow their users to express themselves and edit important documents or subjects. They allow their users to share their posted with the general public.

Old vs News Media

As we may know media is anything that can communicate to people. In the past with had a media that wasn’t that faster as the one that encompass today. We classified the old media as the newspaper, radio and television. When we had those media, we would have to wait for a certain times to be communicated, such as in order to read the newspaper we would have to wait for the morning or evening. Also, sometimes we were not that inform about what were happening on other countries. During the era of the old media, we were kind “outdated.” But definitely, the new media came to renovate the old version of the media. We consider new media to everything that require a digital computer for the distribution or exhibition, such as, newspaper online, social networks, eBooks, blog, wiki, Google, and YouTube. Thanks to this new media we are better informed, we can see different versions of news. We are better informed of what is happening of other countries or even read other countries newspaper. The new media gave us the opportunity to meet new people from anywhere in the world. Now we can be informed immediately as a tragedy happen anywhere, and we have available the newspaper updated anytime that we want to read it. The new media definitely make our life easier than the old media.

Social Networking: Better or worse than the real thing?

Social networks are new media that renovate the social life for most of the people. As users of the different type of social networks site, such as, MySpace, and Facebook, we might be happy to have a Facebook or MySpace because it is for us to meet new people and contact our old friends. But have we ever thought what the real thing is for social networks or if it really exists for our benefit. My research paper going to explain what is the real thing of social network. Also, what are the advantages and disadvantages of been part of a social network. Basically my research paper is going to analyze what is the dark part of those social networks.

What is New Media?

New media are new type of communication systems that replaced the old types of media. As we may know that in the past we considered media to the newspaper, radio, magazines, and television in which we didn’t need the internet to access them. New media is any type of media that require a digital computer for distribution and exhibition, such as newspaper online, eBook, social networking, wiki, blogs, and YouTube. The article “The New Media and Technologies” by Friedman states that “Today, old media are almost always paired with new media – newspapers and magazines have online versions, as well as their own blogs, television networks produce a great deal of online content related to their programming, etc.” The new media have been enhancing the old media because the old media with the time have been updating themselves to pair with the new media. The new media is something that came to renovate the world of the communication.

Social Networking: Better or worse than the real thing?

My research project is going to address the advantage and disadvantage of the social networking. This project is going to explain what is a social network, what it means for the different of people that use it and what are the different social networking that people frequently use. Basically, I am going to explain why is good and bad to have a social and network. It is going to educate the future readings about the real world of social network.

What is new media?

There is now a lot technology that form parts of the new media such as Electronic reading devices, ipod, network information, magazines published, and book edition to read it onlince . These new technology form part of the new media because they came out and it renovates our economic. The internet is very important to the new media because without it the new media would not exist. Most of the time when we use some of new of technology in the market we would have to use the internet either to look for an information about the product.The new media rehacing the old media in that it has been update and adding new things to the market. It has been rehacing the new media because the people just been update most of the old market and making it more comfortable to us.
